Shofuso Japanese House and Garden

The Shofuso Japanese House and Garden is an oasis in the heart of Fairmount Park. This stunning, traditional Japanese house is home to more than an acre of beautifully landscaped gardens. The house and garden is open to the public for educational tours and special events.

The Shofuso was originally opened for the 1876 Centennial Exposition. The current garden was designed by Sano Tansai, a Japanese gardener. The original Japanese house, called a shoin, was moved here from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In the late 1960s, Nakajima Kenji, a famous Japanese landscape artist, undertook an extensive renovation of the Shofuso to reflect the Momoyama style of early 17th century Japan. To improve the garden, representatives from the Sorakuen Garden in Kyoto spent nine days working on it. The pebble beach was modeled after a 1957 drawing by Tansai Sano, and draws inspiration from the Kamo River in Kyoto.

Visitors can tour the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden, a 17th century-style Japanese house. It is located near the Philadelphia Zoo and the Please Touch Museum, and offers an insight into Japanese culture. The house was originally constructed as an exhibit for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. After the exposition, the site was reconstructed and the Japanese house and garden were opened to the public.

Eastern State Penitentiary

When it first opened in 1829, the Eastern State Penitentiary was the most expensive building in America. It was also known for its sprawling layout. However, in the 1940s, residents started reporting ghostly experiences in the prison. Since then, paranormal investigation teams have been studying the site. Today, the former prison is a museum and a haunted attraction known as Terror Behind the Walls.

In the 1830s, the Pennsylvania Prison Society was dissatisfied with the correctional practices at the local jail, the Walnut Street Jail, and called for a larger prison. The new prison was built in 1829, and although the institution was state-run, the Prison Society acted as sole outside overseers. Its first warden was Samuel R. Wood.

The prison was designed to be a place where prisoners could focus on penance and regret their actions. This included spending most of the day alone. The concrete jail cells had skylights so that the ‘Eye of God’ could see the prisoners. Other modern comforts included running water and heated cells.
